Bolted on the motor supports, did a touch of transmission cleaning.
INFORMATIONAL ITEM:
Just an FYI. If you're planning on undertaking a task such as this, and you plan to use a grinder with a metal brush attachment, which is a very effective cleaning tool, consider the following.
If you're like me, and heaven help us, there are some out there who are, don't wear flip flops while using the grinder, it's painful and dirty. Just do yourself a favor and put on some fucking shoes of some sort.
Yes...those are my working flops. |

More transmission cleaning today. Replaced the tranny (fuckin' pervs) filter, the pan gasket and the pan, then straight to paint. I never suspended anything across forklift forks to paint it before, but it seemed appropriate, so I went with it. I should be getting this engine and transmission coupled back together soon and we'll get right on putting it in the truck....or at least on the frame.
I don't know what that dude is doing in that third pic, he looks like he's about to suck a dick or something. What I do know is that is a Best Buy advertisement.
On another separate note:
I don't know where these parts manufacturers get off not coating their parts in something, hell, anything. I don't really like buying new parts then having to mask them off and paint them. Especially considering the fact that if they are engine parts, they have to have special paint because they get hot. If you don't use high temp paint, the paint will crack, fall off, then the piece will rust, all accelerated by the heat. So, if any of you work for parts manufacturers, fuck you, pick it up a notch! The item in question below is a brand new water pump that I had to mask off and paint. Not cool!
The reason it doesn't look like the pulley beside it is because it's a flat ceramic high temp paint good up to 2000 degrees. |

Engine and transmission are back together. I hope to install tomorrow.
Quite a drastic difference from this one:
Today's aside, my favorite wall note on my note wall:
Just disregard the math, it was a phone call I received while I was working. I thought it was factoring, but, as it turned out, it had to be long division. Whatever. |

I haven't posted anything in a couple of days, so I thought I would take an educational approach today.
I've basically been cleaning parts here and there, and ordering new parts and waiting, and just generally hanging out a lot. Today, I was prepping my rear end. Hahahaha, I slay myself!
At any rate, if you've ever wondered what makes your rear wheel drive automobile go, puts the rubber to the road as it were, this is the piece that does it. Basically, the drive shaft connects, by way of a universal joint, to the yoke on the rear end gear mechanism. Obviously, it turns the yoke, which internally turns a geared shaft inside the axle housing. That shaft then turns the ring gear, that bit gear sticking out of the back there. This turns a gear with a splined inner diameter which the splines on the rear axle fit into. The magic happens when that ring gear redirects the drive shaft torque 90 degrees, that's pretty much this piece's only job. At least that's the way a Ford 9" incher works, others work a touch differently, but pretty much the same gig. Thanks for tuning into today's episode of Mr. Joey's Neighborhood.
Oh, and yes, I'm leaving it that color, it's Red Oxide Primer. That's the color Ford 9" rear ends came from the factory, they always did, from it's inception in the 50's until they stopped making them. So, that's the color it's staying, is it going to look the best? No, definitely not. But, there are just some things you don't change. |

It was during the interview process for this MB Admin gig. Not really a nine incher, but I'm pretty sure everyone realizes that by now. Monkeys tend to exaggerate...
I can send you the pics if you like. |

Oh the Monkey told you it was 9 inches! He so lies, now you know how most women feel! That is why we have isssues helping with construction projects--do you really want this to be 8 inches or were you asking for like 4. It all gets so very confusing. |

Alright!....Hijackers stand aside!
I do apologize for the disappearance. I'll tell you what happened.
Last Saturday I was supposed to leave to go to the beach with 13 of my friends. I told everybody to go without me as I was going to start this engine before I went anywhere. So, Sunday, my goal was to start. All I had to do was get a carburetor on, a couple of exhaust manifolds of some type to direct the exhaust away from my hard restoration and get the drive shaft installed to keep from slinging transmission fluid out the back of the transmission.
Everything was looking really good. Everything was going like a dream, I had everything ready for firing except the driveshaft, so, I drove the u-joints in and went for installing. This is at the point I discovered my drive shaft is about 4 inches too short. I became mad, I became pissed and I became irate.
As it turned out, the tail shaft on the tranny I'm using is shorter than the one which I extracted the drive shaft from, so there must be a tail shaft swap.
I was gonna update about it, but I was so pissed off that I just grabbed my shit and headed for the beach. This is the first decent connection I've had since I've been gone. First, Panama City FL, now I've gone from there over to Gulf Shores, AL to hang out with a couple of other friends.
I had hopes of my dad making this tail shaft swap while I was gone and he almost has except there are two gaskets inside the transmission that are really hard to find for an FMX. So, I'm having to wait on my parts people to run some of those down for me.
I plan on going home tomorrow, but it may be Sunday, really don't know yet. But, I'll be back on the job soon.
See, Midge, I do have a life *kisses and hugs* |

That is too funny right there!
But, I am glad you got out of the garage and out to the beaches. Sounds like you needed it!
Don't get in a big hurry to get back, the old Ford will still be waiting on you for a while. |

Good news! This whole transmission/drive shaft issue should be solved tomorrow. Considering the lady at the parts store order the correct rebuild kit. I only needed two gaskets out of the thing and apparently they can't be bought individually, so I end up paying about $100 for two paper gaskets. Hey, you gotta pay to play I guess, that's the kind of shit you run in to.
At any rate, when that is on the road, I'll be back on the update train. I know you all missed it.
*bowing to sounds of applause* Really, no, you're too kind....way too kind.... |
