I figured this would be a good way for me to keep an accurate timeline on what's happening with my truck restoration. The last time I did this, I couldn't tell you what day I started restoring, or what day I finished, so this time I'm gonna try to do better. Also, I know there is at least one of you who wanted to see what was happening, so here you go. Anybody else who wants to look, it's here, be my guest...

This is what I started with. This was my dads truck, he bought it in 1974, the year I was born. It has been kept in the dry, for the most part except about 5 months, for something like 28 years, he hit a tree on the right side, and the he just parked it, thinking he would fix it sometime, but he never did, then my brother thought he would fix it, but never was able to, so, now, I have taken up the task.

It took me a day to undo the brake lines, the steering column from the steering sector, unhook the emergency brake cables, unplug a few wires, and remove the bolts that hold the cab to the frame. Once I was sure the cab was free of the frame, time to remove.

Image
That's my old man...I'm not sure what he's staring at outside, but something. At any rate, the cab's off.

The green bit at the bottom was where he side-swiped the tree. My brother had already cut and welded a donor piece, so I guess he did start the job.

It took me several days to remove everything from inside the cab. Lots of the pieces in the dash are hard to reach and they all seem to be attached by a different method. A few times I had to call in some help from my dad. There was one special item I had to call in assistance on. I found a toggle switch hanging under the dash which was clearly not factory, so I had to ask him what it was. He told me it was a switch to cut the power to the brake lights. He said if you're running from the cops at night and you turn your head and taillights off, obviously, the brake lights still operate. So, you have to wire in a switch to go full stealth. So, needless to say, I will be keeping the brake light switch in the finished truck.

A word to the wise...removing the dash pad is a bitch.

This is just after I loaded the cab onto the rolling cart I built. Just after this I removed the carpet and the wiring finishing the gutting of the cab.

April 1st, 2009

I had removed the nuts from the bed bolts the same day I was removing the cab bolts and brake lines, so the next day, it was time for the bed to go.

It took a few days to unbolt several pieces from the frame. They're 40 years old, they can be kind of stubborn. I had to remove the brake lines that run the length of the frame, and the fuel line, and the crossmembers for the transmission. Finally, all I had left was the frame, the front suspension and the rear suspension. But finally, it was time to start sandblasting. Another word to the wise, don't be like me and think you have to do everything yourself. If you ever find yourself doing something of this nature. Just pay to have it sandblasted, save yourself the trouble and the nastiness of it.

This is my sandblasting apparel. I hate those stupid blasting hoods.

Obviously, I don't have the fortitude to eat dust and rust and coal slag enough to blast the whole thing in one day, so when I stop for the day, I have to spray primer on the section I blasted to stop it from having surface rust overnight.

At this point, I decided to go ahead and remove the rear axle housing and suspension because I was having trouble accessing some of the areas I needed to blast.

After several days of blasting, I was tired of it, so I decided to take the day to remove the engine I will be using. It's a 302 with an FMX transmission from a '79 Ford Thunderbird. I need it anyway so I could figure out what motor stands and mounts I would need to get to bolt back to the frame, so it was a worthwhile move anyway.

Image

I also took all the external parts off (alternator, starter, etc.) that day, and removed the transmission so I could mount the block to the engine stand for it's restoration work.

During my break from blasting, I decided to go ahead and remove the front suspension so I could blast underneath it more easily. I found it easier to blast if I just suspended the bare frame on it's side. Back to blasting!!!

After removing the rear suspension assembly, I took another little break from blasting the frame to disassemble the rear-end. I blasted the housing, primed and painted it. I've found during this process, you need to do a few things along the way that you can finish quickly to keep yourself motivated.

Ford Blue FTW!!!

Oh yeah...all that shit you see in the floor is coal slag abrasive blasting media. It makes a real mess...and tastes pretty much like shit.

During the next few days, I figured out that the still camera in my video camera, which I had been using up to this point, with the exception of my iPhone camera a couple of times was not up to the par I wanted, so I went and bought another camera so I could have better pictures. Sorry about that.

The frame was finally blasted. So, I sprayed another coat of primer and I was ready to paint.

LET'S PAINT!

The paint is a single stage urethane catalyst. The color is Alumacraft Boat Trailer Black.

FYI: I use a siphon type spray gun for primer and an HVLP for color and clear.

The fresh black chassis.

Yes, the chassis is sitting on 55 gallon drums. Nothing fancy, they're going to get painted along with the frame anyway.

It's raining today. Humidity is bad for painting and blasting, so I haven't done much today except touch up a few spots here and there and do some prep work for the next steps. Nothing worthy of pictures though.

good idea to record your progress. I wish I had done the same when I restored my '67 mustang, but there was no internet and no digital cameras back then.

Thanks for sharing your progress with us. I'm staying tuned...

I usually mix without my mask on, but....man, that stuff is too strong for a lightweight like me. It's rough.....rough I tell you.
